Liza, tell us about yourself
Hi everyone, I'm Liza Perelman. I've been working in the illustration industry for six years, and throughout my career, I’ve been exploring the form and aiming to tell remarkable stories with illustrations.
How did you start drawing?
I started drawing in 2018, though I’ve always loved visual art. As a kid, I often visited museums, captivated by patterns, portraits, and landscapes. I always wondered how people could create such imaginative works every time.
Meeting my husband in 2018 inspired me to take my first steps into illustration. I set myself a challenge to create 100 drawings, capturing memorable events from our then-new life together. These early illustrations, though funny now, are important artifacts of my professional journey.
What kind of clients do you work with?
I often work with charities and social impact organisations. It’s crucial to me that my illustrations benefit people by providing new emotions, support, and inspiration.
What do you like to do most?
Initially, I enjoyed drawing people, but now I’m more immersed in abstraction. I love inventing new characters who do ordinary things like giving flowers, tending the garden, and drinking tea. This perspective on my art is where I find myself most fulfilled right now.
Tell us about your creative process.
I don't usually come up with ideas deliberately. I create images based on associations from my everyday life, which serves as my special Pinterest for reference. I visualise ideas in great detail and transfer them to canvas using my iPad, which has become an indispensable tool for adjusting my drawing in real-time and developing concepts.
What do you think about AI tools?
I think AI tools can be very useful for illustrators. I use them to help with composition and to discover new shapes. Remember, you will always be the creator of your pictures, and no one can take your talent and skills away from you. AI can enhance your work if used wisely.
What inspires you?
My main source of inspiration, cliché as it might be, is nature. I often draw from the shapes and colours found in nature, using it as a starting point to create something unique, unusual, and personal.
